International Trade Law conference website launched

Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva launched the website of the International Trade Law Conference on Tuesday at the Sri Lanka Law College in connection with an international trade Law conference “The Doha Development Agenda and the Future of the Multilateral Trading System”.
Speaking at the launch the Chief justice said that “the website launching and the Trade Law conference are very timely” adding that the country should know how to gain benefits out of international trade rules.
He said that trade system has to be studied in Sri Lanka, adding that the country has a pool of intelligent people which will lead it in the future.
The conference is being organized by the Sri Lanka Law College from July 30 to August 1 at the Cinnamon Grand in Colombo this year.
Eminent experts from the United States, the European Union, India and Sri Lanka will present papers at the conference.
Janak De Silva, Senior State Counsel at the Attorney General’s Department said that the conference would be of immense interest and benefit to a diverse group including those in the business community, policymakers, government officials, economist, legal practitioners, academics, non governmental organizations, diplomats, students, consumer groups and the media.
He explained that expertise from different countries will present papers on areas such as trade in agricultural products, trade in non-agricultural products, trade in services with focus on telecommunication, banking and financial services, trade and development, the World Trade Organization and regionalism, dispute settlement, trade, environment and sustainable development and future MTN rounds.
The conference will look at building awareness amongst stakeholders on the issues arising within the framework of the World Trade Organization and providing a forum for critical discussion of the issue from different perspectives.
Sponsors of the conference are Sri Lanka Telecom, Sri Lanka Insurance, national lottery board, ETV, LBO, LBR, Daily Mirror and the Sunday times and their representative handed over sponsor’s packages to the principal of the law college.
The principal of the Sri Lanka law college W.D. Rodrigo said that the Sri Lanka Law College is one of the premier institutions for the teaching of law in Sri Lanka and has taken a pioneering role in the advancement of knowledge in the sphere of International Trade Law, of which the World Trade Organization and it's regulatory regime forms an integral part.

Mehar Mohammad Khalil: A hero across borders

Today he is being hailed as a lifesaver after he drove the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricketers to safety, through a hail of gunfire on Tuesday.Khalil, the bus driver who saved the lives of the Sri Lankan cricket team during the terror attack is now considered a big hero in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Khalil kept a cool head and drove the bus to safety when it came under gunfire, grenade and rocket attack from terrorists. His routine while the visiting team was in Pakistan was to get up at 6 in the morning, and take the team daily from the hotel to the stadium. He was usually busy with the guest team members, till late at night.
